Fueled in part by transformative grants since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the Worcester medical school is expanding. To maintain this level of growth, however, there is one key ingredient: people.

UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester received a $5-million gift from alumni Donna and Robert Manning, the latter of whom chairs the UMass Board of Trustees.

The move applies to all Reliant locations, which span across Worcester County and the MetroWest area. The move comes in the wake of staffing shortages at the group, a problem augmented across the healthcare industry by the COVID-19 pandemic.

UMass Memorial Health published its first-ever health equity report about its efforts to address racial disparities in health care in Central Massachusetts, largely through its COVID-19 response over the last two years.

The building, currently known as the Project Center, is to be renamed to the Laurie A. Leshin Global Project Center, according to the Thursday announcement from WPI.
