The Worcester City Council's economic development committee will review the city's proposed new agreement with a developer looking to build next to the under-construction Polar Park baseball stadium.
The planned $125-million mixed-use development surrounding the Polar Park baseball stadium in the Canal District will be smaller than anticipated and be realized about two years later than initially scheduled.
The soon-to-be Worcester Red Sox have released a seating plan for Polar Park that includes detailed renderings for the first time, as well as a slightly reduced capacity.
More than two years after the Pawtucket Red Sox said they were moving to Worcester, there is no formal lease agreement legally obligating the team to move, the city doesn't yet own the ballpark site, and there's no binding agreement with a developer whose mixed-use project is relied heavily on for new tax revenue.
The Worcester Red Sox unveiled the team’s 2021 season jerseys and caps on Monday, marking the two-year anniversary since plans for the Polar Park baseball stadium were first announced, according to a press release.Â
Before construction even began, a timetable for completing Polar Park was called ambitious. Despite a month pause in construction, planners are still holding out hope: the Worcester Red Sox will begin playing at the ballpark in April 2021.
The City of Worcester plans to allow some construction projects to move forward beginning Monday, following a month-long shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, City Manager Edward Augustus said during a Sunday press conference.
