Zero-emission buses expand west from Worcester
The Worcester Regional Transit Authority has four Proterra buses in rotation.
The largest regional transit authority in Massachusetts has purchased three 40-foot buses that produce no tailpipe emissions from the company that sold similar buses to Worcester in 2013.
Proterra, which has sold more than 300 zero-emission buses in North America, announced Monday that the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) has bought three of its Catalyst FC buses, two fast chargers and one depot charger. Each bus eliminates nearly 244,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, and both the bodies and batteries in the buses are designed to withstand Northeast weather conditions and low temperatures, according to Proterra.
The transit authority serves 24 communities with 186 buses. The new buses will serve riders along Route P21E in Holyoke and Springfield.
In a statement, PVTA Administrator Mary MacInnes said "we are committed over the next 10 years to expand upon projects that reduce energy consumption and increase access to clean, efficient mass transit. The integration of our first electric buses into our routes is a big step in making this happen."
Proterra counts the Worcester Regional Transit Authority among its customers as Worcester officials deployed company vehicles in its fleet in 2013.
