Youth tobacco bill set for unveiling

The committee will likely weigh in on e-cigarettes.

Public Health Committee chairs Rep. Kate Hogan and Sen. Jason Lewis plan to announce Thursday details of new tobacco legislation released by the committee.

The bill, according to Hogan's office, aims to reduce youth tobacco use and nicotine addiction as well as establish uniform statewide regulations.

Lewis told the News Service in November that the committee was considering steps including raising the use and purchase age for all tobacco products to 21, a move already made by more than 70 Massachusetts municipalities and the state of Hawaii. The committee was also weighing restrictions on e-cigarettes, such as banning their use in indoor public places that are already smoke-free.

Lewis and Hogan will hold a press conference Thursday at 1 p.m. in Room 428.
