Wyman-Gordon faces $145K in OSHA fines

Wyman-Gordan has been cited for three repeat and 10 serious violations of workplace safety standards at the aerospace parts manufacturer’s North Grafton plant, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The alleged violations have resulted in proposed penalties of $145,600 following citations issued on Dec. 4. The investigation began after OSHA responded to a complaint regarding workplace safety, according to the organization. During that investigation, the organization reportedly found electrical panels damaged by forklifts, blocked access to electrical panels, as well as failure to adequately guard band saws and a milling machine to ensure employees did not come into contact with the machines’ operating parts.

OSHA had previously cited Wyman-Gordon in 2013 and 2011 for similar hazards at this plant and at one in Cleveland. New hazards reportedly found by the organization included inadequate emergency exit signage; blocked access to fire extinguishers; slip, trip and fall hazards; damaged insulation on electrical cords; exposed electrical conductors and employees not wearing seat belts while operating powered industrial trucks.

Wyman-Gordan has 15 business days to comply with OSHA regulations meet with OSHA's area director, or contest the findings. A representative from Wyman-Gordon could not be reached prior to press deadline.

Wyman-Gordon, originally founded in Worcester in 1883, has operations in the city, as well as its forging facility in North Grafton.
