Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the Worcester Business Development Corp. (WBDC) will receive the Silver Hammer Award for their efforts at preserving a historic building as part of the construction at Gateway Park.
The Silver Hammer award recognizes business and organizations that have helped to restore life in the region's historical assets. Gateway Park LLC, a public-private partnership between WPI and the WBDC, purchased a building at 68 Prescott Street once belonging to Stephen Salisbury II. Salisbury was responsible for donating the land that became the WPI campus, and for creating a business model that rented buildings to entrepreneurs.
Although in disrepair when purchased, the building was saved and slated for restoration. It will be integrated into the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center, part of a major redevelopment undertaking of a former Worcester brownfield.
The award will be presented at the Worcester Chamber of Commerce's 131st Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
