WPI, UMass Medical School Partner For Health Care

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) announced a five-year strategic partnership for research and educational programs in the health care industry.

In a statement, WPI said the agreement creates a partnership between WPI's Healthcare Delivery Institute (HDI) and UMMS "to bring clinical, scientific, engineering and business management expertise to bear on a range of complex challenges facing the health care system."

HDI includes more than 20 research teams at WPI, outside health care providers and industry partners working to address the challenge of the future of health care delivery, according to WPI. Faculty researchers at the school affiliated with HDI work in areas such as systems engineering, data analytics, mobile and wireless health applications, information technology, advanced robotics and portable medical devices for monitoring and imaging.

"Faculty at our institutions have collaborated on projects for many years. Through this new affiliation we hope to create a dynamic and targeted partnership that leverages our respective strengths to advance new technologies, educational and clinical processes that better human health," said WPI Provost Eric Overström.

The partnership was announced at an HDI symposium Wednesday. According to WPI, both institutions will appoint members to a leadership committee that will plan, facilitate and oversee faculty research collaborations and graduate educational programs. The program will also include career development components such as physician leadership training.
