WPI to open Boston collaboration space Jan. 31

WPI is opening a education and collaboration center in the glass building at center in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute will officially open next week its new collaboration space in Boston, which is meant to capitalize on its proximity to technology companies, start-ups and a wealth of professional talent in the city.
The Jan. 31 opening event will include WPI President Laurie Leshin, Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito.
The 6,400-square-foot space called WPI Seaport features a classroom and spaces designed to be flexible enough to accommodate a range of uses in small and large groups. It is located at 303 Congress St. in Boston's Seaport neighborhood, the same area that's home to the headquarters of General Electric and Vertex. Alexion Pharmaceuticals and the software firm PTC have announced they're moving to the fast-growing neighborhood, and Amazon is reportedly looking for up to 500,000 square feet of space for offices there.
The WPI space, which the school is leasing for seven years, is intended for students and faculty to conduct research projects with corporate sponsors and technology partners in areas including biomedical research, financial technology and medical robotics.
Leshin said last year the new Boston outpost will allow WPI to "bring more opportunities back to our campus and our home town of Worcester."
