The building, currently known as the Project Center, is to be renamed to the Laurie A. Leshin Global Project Center, according to the Thursday announcement from WPI. Leshin is leaving WPI in May to become the director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology.

“Naming a building on a college campus recognizes commitment to the university, to its mission and values, and to its community,” said Jack Mollen, chair of WPI’s board of trustees. “Laurie Leshin, WPI’s first woman president, has been a transformational leader who has tremendously helped the growth of this university from a regional engineering school to a globally recognized STEM institution with a flourishing research enterprise."

Leshin has served as WPI’s 16th president since 2014. During her service, WPI launched the Center for Project-Based Learning,  The Global School, as well as the new Center for Well-Being, following several student deaths.

WPI Provost Winston Oluwole Soboyejowill will serve as interim president following Leshin's departure while the university conducts a national search for her replacement.
