WPI To Build New Gym With $56M In MassDevelopment Bonds

Worcester Polytechnic Institute will use $56 million in tax exempt bonds issued by MassDevelopment to build a 140,000-square-foot sports and recreation center on its main campus.

The bond funds will also help finance renovations, repairs and improvements to other facilities on WPI's main campus that are part of its seven-year capital projects plan.

Construction on the sports center will begin after graduation in May and is expected to be finished in August 2012. The facility is designed to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified.

Gilbane Construction Inc. of Providence is the project's contractor.

The center was designed by Boston-based Cannon Design Inc. and will include a 29,000-square-foot gymnasium, squash and racquetball courts, athletic offices, a glass-covered passageway to WPI's Harrington Auditorium and other features.
