With applications jumping 53 percent over the past five years, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) announced record numbers for its 2018 undergraduate class.
WPI said it has received 10,219 applications, a 19 percent increase over last year’s 8,578, also a record. The private college said the diversity of its applicants is growing, with 25 percent more applications from women and 42 percent more international students applying. The school has also expanded its geographic reach, with a 43 percent increase in Florida applicants, followed by California and New Jersey, which both saw 32 percent jumps.
“WPI’s reputation for student success is a key driver behind these record numbers. Families are attracted to WPI because they know our students are in high demand and that a remarkable number of our graduates achieve financial success,” said Senior Vice President Kristin Tichenor.
“We believe that is WPI’s true value proposition: combining a top-notch education with life skills that will serve them well personally and professionally.”
WPI credits the four-decade-old WPI Plan, which emphasizes project-based learning, and WPI’s Global Perspective Program, which allows students to complete projects around the world, with helping pique interest. The school has also been highly ranked for return on investment, taking the number 15 spot on Payscale’s new College Education ROI Rankings.
