Three Worcester Polytechnic Institute researchers have received $756,000 in awards from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to support ongoing research.
The researchers all work at WPI’s Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park in Worcester.
Jose Arguello, a chemistry and biochemistry professor received a three-year, $295,000 award from the USDA to further a study of the biochemical processes bacteria use during infection to overcome the body’s defenses.
Elizabeth Ryder, an associate professor of biology and biotechnology, received a three-year, $228,000 award from the NIH to advance her study of how nerve cells develop.
Pamela Weathers, a professor of biology and biotechnology, received a three-year, $223,000 award from NIH to continue a study of a plant that produces a molecule that is approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration to treat malaria.
