Lane Harrison, associate professor in the computer science department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has been awarded $747,283 by the National Science Foundation for his work evaluating the effectiveness of data visualizations.

Harrison’s work, in collaboration with the University of Utah and the University of Toronto, will develop a suite of tools, called reVISit, to better understand how people interact with data visualizations. The technology will allow researchers to more effectively conduct online experiments in the field.

“The greater visualization community is putting more critical data and information into the hands of more people through visualizations than ever before. There’s a risk that we might share data in certain visual forms and not have the studies in place to know what is and isn’t effective, and why,” Harrison said in an announcement posted to the WPI website.

Advancements in this area will benefit organizations, journalists, and public agencies in being able to effectively use constantly changing data, according to WPI.
