Three Worcester Polytechnic Institute researchers have been awarded nearly $1.8 million for an electronic manufacturing project, the college announced Wednesday, one day after it announced a $1-million grant for a new research and development center.

The most recent grant will fund the development of a glove with sensors which will allow users to operate and train robotic systems, according to the announcement. Pratap Rao, Cagdas Onal, and Zhi Li are the three WPI professors heading the project.

WPI is partnering with UMass Lowell, where four other researchers are leading similar work.

Nearly $1 million of the award comes from federal funds from SEMI-FlexTech, who has a cooperative agreement with the Army Research laboratory. The other $845,000, which will go towards purchasing equipment, comes from state funds through the Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative.

On Tuesday, the college announced another grant from the state’s Innovation Institute at MassTech, which will be used for a new center focused on developing semiconductor security.
