WPI Prof Gets National Science Foundation Gig

Worcester Polytechnic Institute professor José Argüello has been chosen for a one-year appointment as a program director at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Argüello, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry, will work in the division of molecular and cellular biosciences within the NSF's Directorate for Biological Sciences. NSF supports science and engineering research and education.

In his new role, Argüello will direct money to support research and other activities to help in the understanding of living systems at the molecular, sub-cellular and cellular levels.

In his research, Argüello studies proteins that transport heavy metals in cell membranes. He has been on the WPI faculty since 1996. He has a degree in biological chemistry from the National University of Córdoba and a doctorate in biological sciences from the National University of Río Cuarto in Argentina. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Cincinnati and received a research development award for minority faculty from the National Institutes of Health.
