Worcester Polytechnic Institute will receive $2 millionĀ in federal funding for the school’s Center for Untethered Healthcare and the Center for Neuroprosthetics and BioMEMS.
The grants, awarded through a U.S. Senate Defense Applications Bill, will allow the institution to focus on research in highly specialized areas.Ā The Center for Untethered Healthcare is currently working to develop an integrated system of medical sensors, portable ultrasound scanners, and wireless technology to provide more effective medical care for battlefield soldiers injured on the ground.
The recently-founded Center for Neuroprosthetics and BioMEMS is currently developing technology that will allow prosthetic limbs and organs to be controlled by signals from the brain.Ā
The allocations were part of aĀ U.S. Senate Defense Appropriations Bill that included $12.3 million for improving national security for the 3rd Congressional District.
