Worcester Polytechnic Institute has hired Selçuk I. Güçeri as its first dean of engineering.
Güçeri spent the past 10 years in the same position at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He has also authored more than 100 publications on manufacturing, materials mechanics and software development.
He will join WPI in early 2011.
Güçeri, who is originally from Turkey, has bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Middle East Technical University in Ankara. He completed a Ph.D. as a NATO fellow at the North Carolina State University Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Before joining Drexel, he served on the faculty of the University of Delaware and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Güçeri's hire completes WPI's plan to add three academic deanships. It has already hired Mark P. Rice as dean for the college's school of business and Karen Kashmanian Oates as dean of arts and sciences. WPI says the new deans will work with other faculty members to encourage collaborative learning.
