Worcester Polytechnic Institute is launching what it is calling The Global School to expand one of its main academic features: Projects students undertake overseas.

WPI, which announced the launch Thursday, said it is searching for a dean to lead the new school.

The Global School is planned to include global partnerships with a focus on real-world problem solving, the school said. It will involved research to develop solutions to local and global problems, and expand resources on campus, including a collaborative space where students, faculty and visiting scholars share their work.

New degree programs are also involved, with bachelor's, master's and doctorate programs in international and global studies. New undergraduate certificate or minor programs in energy, water, food, global health and STEM education are being considered.

WPI launched a global component of its project-based curriculum in 1997 as a way to give students more real-world research experience before graduation. Today, roughly four out of five students go to more than 50 project centers around the world to complete such work in areas including energy, food, health and urban sustainability.
