Worcester Polytechnic Institute announced the launch of an institute aimed at solving the problem of delivering high-quality health care for a growing and aging population.

The WPI Healthcare Institute, which has approximately $4 million in funding, will develop mobile and wireless smart phone applications to provide patient care, study the adoption of health information technology systems and mine data now generated and kept by various systems used in the health care setting.

WPI researchers will work with the University of Massachusetts Medical School and other providers.
