WPI Green Roof Install Set For Tuesday

Worcester Polytechnic Institute expects to install the city's first "living green roof" atop the school's new East Hall on Boynton Street Tuesday.

The university said the 5,000-square-foot roof showcases the school's commitment to sustainability and will be used in research. It's also part of getting East Hall LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The roof will be planted with sedums, a groundcover or shrub-type plant popular on green roofs in Europe. WPI's sedums were planted this spring in Kensington, Conn.

According to the university, half of the roof will be traditional, and the other half will be "green." Students will measure, test, and compare the quantity and quality of storm water on the traditional roof side with that on the "green" roof side.

East Hall is a 232-bed apartment-style residence hall with a 189-car parking garage.
