Retail giant Kohl’s has appointed a Worcester Polytechnic Institute alumnus as its new CEO, the company announced this week.

Michelle Gass, a 1990 graduate of WPI, was named as the department store chain’s leader. She graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and later joined a Cincinnati-based health care development firm Procter & Gamble.

According to WPI, Gass moved to the West Coast in 1996 to begin a career at Starbucks as a category and marketing manager.

Gass spent nearly 17 years with Starbucks, holding a variety of leadership roles overseeing marketing, merchandising and global strategy, according to a Kohl’s announcement.

She came to Kohl’s in 2013 as a chief customer officer with a focus on marketing for the store’s online shop. Two years later, her role expanded to chief merchandising and customer officer, where she was responsible for the company’s merchandising and planning and product development divisions.

Gass replaces outgoing CEO Kevin Mansell, who will retire in May.

According to WPI, Gass has received the institute's 2005 Ichabod Washburn Young Alumni Award for Professional Achievement.
