Supports of the Higgins Armory, the 82-year-old armor museum in Worcester slated to close at the end of the year, have launched an interactive website aimed at keeping the museum open.
The website, www.savehiggins.org, allows visitors to post funding ideas to support the financially-troubled museum and to sign a petition to save it. The site also provides information on donating to the Higgins Armory, as well as news related to the planned closure.
Ralph Tillingast, an engineer and former Worcester resident who earned an engineering degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, designed the site, according to a statement. Tillingast, who now lives in New Jersey, said the Higgins Armory is a "treasured national asset that must be preserved."
"SaveHiggins.org will serve as a repository for creative thinking, for alternative ways to keep the collection of armor in its historic castle, and a focal point for proposals and discussions by enthusiastic people all across the country who want to share new ideas for boosting the endowment and broadening awareness," Tillingast said.
The Higgins Armory announced it will close earlier this month. Its collection of arms and armor, including items from the medieval era, will be transferred to the Worcester Art Museum.
