WPI Gets $4M For Energy Research

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will continue to work on ways to separate hydrogen from coal, thanks to a $3.99-million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, according the office of Rep. James McGovern, D-Worcester.

WPI researchers are working to improve on existing methods of separation, aiming to remove high-purity hydrogen from the coal. Their method involves the use of palladium membranes.

The project will span the country. WPI will collaborate with Membrane Technology and Research in California, Johnson Matthey in Pennsylvania and T3 Scientific in Minnesota.

Yi Hua Ma, a chemical engineering professor at WPI, said the grant, which renews an earlier $2.5-million award, will take the technology developed at WPI to the “pre-engineering/pilot scale.”
