WPI Finishes Strong In Solar Homes Contest In China

An international team of universities, led by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), finished in first and fourth place in two juried categories for its solar home design, branded the Solatrium.

The team, called Team BEMANY, was one of 19 competing in the Solar Decathlon China 2013 competition slated to wrap up Tuesday in Datong, China. Teams were charged with designing, building and operating attractive, affordable, net-zero energy houses powered by the sun. The Solatrium was built on the WPI campus earlier this year, then disassembled and shipped to China for the event.

The team placed first in the competition’s hot water and energy balance contests, and fourth in the communications criteria, and finished eighth overall in the contest.

“We feel proud of our team and what we have been able to accomplish in this two-year endeavor,” said Tahar El-Korchi, the team co-leader who heads the department of civil & environmental engineering at WPI.
