Jean King, the dean of school of arts and sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has been named to a top council at the National Institutes of Health.

A neuroscientist and researcher, King will be one of 27 members on the NIH Council of Councils, according to a Thursday press release from WPI. Each council member represents interests from a specific institute or center at the NIH, and King has been appointed to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

The council advises the NIH director on matters related to the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives, according to the NIH website. The council, including King, will make recommendations on research to pursue, future public health challenges, and other areas of strategic planning, according to the press release.

“It is an honor and privilege to be part of such an auspicious body representing NCCIH, an agency focused on whole-person health, which I believe is the future of medicine,” King, who is Black, said in the press release. “I would like to bring the voice of all the communities I represent to the table: race, gender, WPI, and the state of Massachusetts, where there is a strong focus on biotechnology and health.”

King will be a member of the council until 2028, according to the press release. She has previously served as scientific consultant for the NIH and the National Science Foundation. At WPI, she is a professor of biology and biotechnology and an affiliate professor in the biomedical engineering department, in addition to serving as dean.
