Worcester Polytechnic Institute has canceled summer programs in China and Taiwan out of concern of risks associated with coronavirus and is requiring students in Bangkok to head home.
WPI required students at its Bangkok Project Center in Thailand to return to the United States after the school learned a Chulalongkorn University researcher working in a building where WPI students conduct project work in Bangkok was on a flight with two passengers who later tested positive for coronavirus. The researcher has since tested positive, WPI said.
The college said it has no evidence students were exposed to coronavirus but out of an abundance of caution wanted to require students and faculty advisors return home as soon as possible.
WPI is canceling its summer programs in China and Taiwan and urging students to be careful if traveling for spring break. The school has set up a coronavirus working group directed by WPI Health Services and comprised of key campus partners including global studies, student affairs, residential services, campus safety and facilities. The group meets weekly to determine appropriate adjustments to WPI operations based on developments with the outbreak.
Assumption College announced Monday it is suspending operations for the spring semester at its Rome campus after a major outbreak has taken place in Italy.
