Worcester Polytechnic Institute‘s new residence hall has received a Green Building of America award from Real Estate & Construction Review.
The 232-bed building is awaiting LEED certification, which the university expects to be at the gold level. It features the city of Worcester’s first “green” roof, planted with sedum chive and other plants. WPI’s department of civil and environmental engineering uses the roof in academic research on storm water. The building also uses extra windows to reduce the need for artificial light and has storage space for bicycles and special parking for hybrids and alternative-fuel cars.
Along with the award, the building will be featured in the Northeast 2009-10 edition of Real Estate & Construction Review’s Green Success Stories.
