WPI alum donates $40M for undergrad scholarships

Already the largest single donor to the university, Worcester Polytechnic Institute alumnus Robert A. Foisie has now also given his alma mater its largest single donation totaling $40 million, the school announced Wednesday.

Foisie, a first-generation college graduate who graduated from WPI in 1956, received scholarships during his years as an undergraduate and, over the years has provided scholarships to some 580 WPI students, the school said. With this new commitment, Foisie’s lifetime of giving to WPI will amount to more than $63 million, the university said.

Foisie will receive an honorary doctorate of engineering degree at WPI’s commencement ceremonies on Saturday.  The university will also name the WPI School of Business, analong with a new innovation center (in its renovated Alumni Gym building) in honor of Foisie’s lifetime giving, it said.

This gift supports the $200 million "if…The Campaign to Advance WPI," – the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in WPI’s history, which was launched in 2012 with a goal of ensuring that 37.5 percent of donations — or about $75 million — will directly benefit students through scholarships and other financial aid.
