Wormtown Brewery in Worcester will be the official hometown brewery of Boston Red Sox’ top minor league team once Polar Park is built.
The brewery announced Tuesday its sponsorship and planned release of a new beer called Welcome to Worcester, $1.25. That figure is the amount that will be donated to the team’s charitable foundation for each beer sold.
The Worcester Red Sox will move the team from Pawtucket in 2021 and will start play in a new $101-million ballpark.
“We are proud to join with Wormtown to provide a natural partnership between the most popular brewery in the Heart of the Commonwealth with what we hope will be another popular team in town when the Red Sox begin play at Polar Park in 2021,” said Rob Crain, PawSox senior vice president for sales and marketing .
The partnership follows the brewery's mission to source local ingredients and stay as local as possible as it makes a variety of craft beer.
In a statement, Wormtown’s Managing Partner David Fields called the team’s move to Worcester and an overall $240-million redevelopment of the Canal District the crowning achievements of the city’s revival.
“Since the industrial leagues, Worcester has always been a baseball town,” Fields said. “Lesser known is that it also has a great brewing history. We could not be any more excited to align ourselves with Worcester’s home town team!”
The stadium project has been in the works for a year in conjunction with City Manager Edward Augustus and Mayor Joe Petty.
Welcome to Worcester, $125 will be brewed using wooden bats from Connecticut supplier Dream Bat Company.
Ben Roesch, brewmaster and founder of the brewery, said the beer will be a classic Vienna lager featuring an amber color, light caramel sweetness and a clean, crisp finish.
“This beer will pair amazingly well with a Coney Island Hot Dog, a slice of Table Talk Apple Pie, and a side of Triple-A Baseball,” Roesch said.
Wormtown is now one of at least 21 sponsors of the team, including UniBank in Whitinsville, Worcester manufacturer Table Talk Pies and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
