Boston coworking space company Workbar, LLC will open its first MetroWest location in Framingham in July. This will be the company’s 11th shared common office space, and the one furthest west of Boston. All are within 40 miles of Boston, and each is roughly 20 minutes from another Workbar location.
“As one of the fastest growing and most diverse cities in Massachusetts, we believe Framingham is the perfect choice for Workbar's 11th location,” Workbar CEO Sarah Travers said in a December press release announcing the new location. “Following the outstanding success of our Workbar Needham location, we knew that we needed to make the MetroWest region our next priority.”
The Framingham location will occupy 21,000 square feet of the office building on 111 Speen St., off of Route 9 and the Mass Pike. The building was purchased in 2022 for $13 million by Cambridge-based North Colony Asset Management and Boston-based Paradigm Properties. Workbar will take up the second floor of the five-story building. The space will be divided into 80% shared working space and 20% private offices and enterprise suites. It will be designed with Workbar’s neighborhoods, which are designated spaces differentiated by the noise level in each area, as well as meeting rooms, a cafe, and WiFi. The facility will include a podcast studio and a telepresence room with smart TV monitors.
WorkBar started in 2009 in Boston and originally served mostly small business owners and gig economy workers who were searching for office amenities without necessarily needing an office space. Since the coronavirus pandemic forced more people to work from home and pushed companies into exploring more hybrid work environments, the company has seen a jump in employees searching for office space that is more flexible and easier to commute to.
WorkBar is in the process of opening another new location in Quincy in May.
