Construction will unofficially begin next week on a Market Basket grocery store that will anchor the Maynard Crossing mixed-use development in Maynard.
The $130-million Maynard Crossing project is slated to include 306,000 square feet of retail, a 180-unit apartment complex called The Vue at Maynard Crossing, and a 143-unit senior independent living community. Planet Fitness, 110 Grill, The Paper Store and Hola, a Mexican restaurant, are also slated to open there.
The 70,000 square-foot Market Basket will add to 80 already open by the Tewksbury company, with others on the horizon, including at the former Edgemere Drive-In site on Route 20 in Shrewsbury.
A ceremonial groundbreaking for the Maynard Market Basket is scheduled for Sept. 17 with area public officials and representatives from the developer, Capital Group Properties of Southborough. Work is already well underway on the residential components of Maynard Crossing, with the apartments slated to open this fall and the senior living development late this year or early next year.
Maynard Crossing is being built on Parker Street on a 58-acre site long home to offices for defunct tech company Digital Equipment Corp. DEC bought the site in the early 1970s, later adding two additional buildings, according to the Maynard Historical Society.
The company closed the Parker Street offices in 1998, and much of the two decades since have been spent by various parties trying to redevelop the site.
