Work On Acton Rail Station Begins

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray joined local and other state officials this week in South Acton at a groundbreaking ceremony for a project that will renovate the busiest station on the Fitchburg commuter rail line.

The project will feature new canopies, passenger shelters, benches, signage, improved parking, a train approach warning system, lighting and other security measures.

“The train to Boston is vital for our community,” said Rep. Corey Atkins, a Concord Democrat. “Train travel reduces traffic and pollution on Route 2, and riding the train gives people time to work, read or relax.”

The station renovations are part of an overall $150 million the state is investing in upgrades to the Fitchburg line.

The South Acton project is slated for completion by mid-2014.
