The Worcester restaurant simjang, a Korean-inspired eatery on Shrewsbury Street, will close after Jan. 1 to be remade with a taco-centered menu.

The new restaurant, to be called Luci’s, was inspired by a desire to have affordable and versatile food, said Jared Forman, the chef and co-owner of simjang and sister restaurant deadhorse hill on Main Street.

Simjang will be relocated elsewhere, with a location to be determined.

“It took my love of just having a cheap taco — that was just pure nostalgia and satisfaction,” Forman said of his early days in the restaurant industry in New York City, of leaving work and grabbing tacos to eat as a quick meal.

Forman and his fellow owners in the restaurant group — Sean Woods and Bert LaValley — opened simjang in early 2018, expanding from deadhorse hill, their original Worcester restaurant opened in 2016.

Simjang replaced Sweet Kitchen & Bar, which occupied the space for nine years. The Korean restaurant's bright decor, including a massive mural along one wall, will largely stay, Forman said, and the closure will not be long.

“The build-out that we did is perfect,” he said.

Forman was in Mexico City on Monday, taking inspiration for the restaurant as he says he has in other travels before.

“We're eating tacos all day, but it's so many different expressions, it's like you're in a different part of the country with every taco you have,” he said. "Every day of life is practice for tomorrow," he said of the trip.

Luci’s will be named after a Mexican man named Luciano, who Forman said he’s worked with in Boston and New York City who helped inspire the concept.
