Worcester's Printers Building wins preservation award

The Printers Building
The Printers Building in downtown Worcester, which is being renovated as it shifts from its namesake former use to a range of modern uses, has received an award from an urban revitalization group.
Jane Jacobs in the Woo, named after the late champion of redevelopment of cities, gave its 2017 Jane Award to the Printers Building Sunday.
The seven-story building at 44-50 Portland St. has been the longtime home to Davis Publications and for decades hosted multiple printing operations. The last printer, Miles Press, moved out in January.
Now, the building is being remade with startup spaces like Technocopia, the Worcester CleanTech Incubator and Action! Worcester, and two planned arts uses with ArtsWorcester and IgWorcesterMA. A radio station, filmaking studio and music studio also have homes there.
“The Printers Building is a model of a creative revamp of an historic property and stands in direct contrast to the potential mistake of demolishing Notre Dame down the street,” Joyce Mandell, the founder and director of Jane Jacobs in the Woo, said in a statement, referring the former church on the east end of Worcester Common that's on the verge of being taken down.
Julian Wade, the publisher and fifth-generation family member of Davis Publications, accepted the award on behalf of the company, which owns the building.
