Worcester's Harvey Ball event postponed to spring, over COVID concerns

Mechanics Hall previously hosted the Worcester Historical Museum's annual Harvey Ball.

The Worcester Historical Museum announced on Tuesday it will postpone its 21st Harvey Ball celebration, scheduled for October, among the first major fall events in Central Massachusetts to postpone or cancel due to concerns over a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

The celebration has been postponed to spring out of caution and concern for the wellbeing of the community, according to a press release from the WHM Board of Trustees and the Harvey Ball Committee.

Events and gatherings in Massachusetts have largely resumed as of March when the state entered Phase IV of its economic reopening plan following the 2020 shutdown orders in the initial phase of the coronavirus pandemic. Phase IV allowed for the reopening of indoor and outdoor stadiums, arenas, and ballparks, and exhibition and convention halls also beginning to operate, according to Mass.gov. Since that time, Central Massachusetts events and fundraisers have started to schedule their events and have largely stayed on track despite a rise in COVID cases nationally and in Massachusetts.

On July 30, however, the Massachusetts Department of Health reinstated a new mask advisory for fully vaccinated people to wear face coverings indoors. There are still no restrictions against group gatherings.

In Worcester County, there were 504 newly reported COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

The Worcester Railers, DCU Center, and The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts all cancelled large events such as games and productions in 2020. In April 2021, stART on the Street cancelled its second annual festival.

World Smile Day is traditionally held on the first Friday of October and commemorates the creation of the smiley face, designed by Worcester resident Harvey Ball, in 1963.
