Good Chemistry, working in conjunction with Worcester city staff, have mapped out the first 30 days of recreational marijuana sales at its Harrison Street store, which will be the first in the city's history.
The License Commission on Thursday gave its thumbs up to the plan, which calls for police details paid by Good Chemistry, security personnel, an appointment-based sales model and parking at the Wyman-Gordon lot off of Madison Street.
Customers will have to pre-register -- for at least the first 30 days -- for an appointment on the company’s website in order to buy their legal weed. If they don’t, customers will be turned away, according to a document on file with the License Commission.
Those appointments will be limited to just 45 an hour. The store will be open from 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
At Thursday’s meeting, Attorney Mark Donahue with law firm Fletcher Tilton said the company anticipates the store opening for recreational sales by early April.
For the first week of sales, the company will pay for four police detail officers and one supervisor. After the first week, the company will pay for just two detail officers for the remainder of the first 30 days.
Good Chemistry is required to employ four full-time security guards, two of whom will be located in front of the building or in the lobby. The other two will be stationed at opposite ends of Harrison Street.
Their job will be to ensure people walking to the store have made reservations.
Another employee will be located outside of the store with a mobile device to check for proof of reservations.
The measures agreed to by the company and city are meant to ensure pedestrian and vehicular traffic doesn’t congest the area. In other locations like Cultivate in Leicester, traffic congestion became an issue leading to several community meetings.
Good Chemistry should be the first recreational marijuana store to open in Worcester. The company was granted a final license from the Cannabis Control Commission on Feb. 21.
It has typically taken a few weeks after that final license approval before retail stores are given the final OK to open.
