Worcester’s first marijuana dispensary of any kind is expected to open Aug. 2.
Good Chemistry, a Colorado-based company, was approved on Thursday to open its medical marijuana dispensary in the Canal District at 9 Harrison St.
The state Department of Public Health approval comes just days after the Worcester Board of Health approved the local license on Monday.
In a statement to WBJ, the company said it’s looking at Aug. 2 for an official opening date to sell medical marijuana only, though the company said it will apply for a license from the Cannabis Control Commission to operate an adult-use dispensary at the site as well.
Good Chemistry will be the first medical marijuana dispensary to open in Worcester since the law legalizing the medical use and sale of the drug was approved in 2012.
The company and Worcester agreed to a host community agreement more than two years ago in March 2016.
According to the DPH, Good Chemistry would be just the third medical marijuana dispensary to open in Worcester County.
Another company, Headyco LLC, is applying to the Cannabis Control Commission for a recreational cultivation license in Worcester.
In total, companies have applied for 16 recreational marijuana licenses in Worcester County. Cultivate in Leicester and Sira Naturals in Milford are the only two companies to have been awarded licenses so far.
