A national group representing highway and transportation departments in all 50 states has selected the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge project on the Worcester-Shrewsbury line as a winner in the 2016 America’s Transportation Awards competition.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) bestowed the Burns Bridge with a regional Quality of Life/Community Development Award and will now consider the project for inclusion in its national "Top Ten" projects competition, which will be announced in September.
"The new Burns Bridge has transformed the Route 9 corridor over Lake Quinsigamond for all bridge users and marine traffic," Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, who lives in Shrewsbury, said in a statement. "We are pleased to see the project receive well-deserved recognition for its contribution to enhancing the quality of life for bridge users and for everyone living in the surrounding area."
The Burns Bridge, which replaced a 100-year-old structurally deficient span, was completed four months ahead of schedule and $5 million under its original $110 million budget, according to the Department of Transportation. The new bridge includes three travel lanes in each direction, dedicated left and right turning lanes on the approach into Worcester, bicycle shoulders and sidewalks in each direction, and a raised roadway profile to provide increased clearance for recreational users of Lake Quinsigamond, according to MassDOT.
