Worcester's 3cross Fermentation Cooperative, a small beermaker, said Thursday it will begin shifting from glass bottles to cans, a production method helping craft brewers better distribute their beer.
The 16-ounce cans will initially be available in limited releases at 3cross' taproom at 4 Knowlton Ave. They will be available first to co-op members on Wednesday and to the general public on Thursdays, while supplies last.
3cross' beer is available at its taproom and on draft at three restaurants in Worcester: BirchTree Bread Co., deadhorse hill, and The Boynton Restaurant & Spirits.
Last year, 3cross brewed 150 barrels of beer, a small amount compared to the 70,000 barrels produced by Central Massachusetts' largest brewer, Wachusetts Brewing Co. in Westminster.
The brewer didn't immediately say if it would distribute the new cans as well, but said the cans will be designed with artwork as a way to bring those artists' work to a new audience and to Worcester's art scene.
The first five beers to be released in cans: Sheldon Brown Ale, with label design by Aaron White; Trackstand Pilsner, with label design by Scott Boilard; Single-Speed Pale Ale, with label design by Derek Ring; Brevet IPA, with label design by Adam Cutler; and Hilltopper Belgian Blond Ale, with label design by Tia Kinsman.
