DCU Center retail store Worcester Wares -- known for its "I Love Worcester" merchandise and T-shirts -- will open its second location on Nov. 30 in the Worcester Public Market, becoming the first business to open in the $21-million mixed-use development.
"We're really excited. We love Worcester, and it will be great to expand, reaching a different crowd with different artists," said Worcester Wares Owner Jessica Walsh, who announced the opening on social media Thursday.
The Nov. 30 opening for the second store ties into Small Business Saturday, the nationwide shopping event following Black Friday and Thanksgiving every year.
The second Worcester Wares location will occupy 333 square feet in the Worcester Public Market, smaller than its first store in the DCU Center. The new store will face Green Street and be between the high-traffic locations of restaurant BirchTree Bread Co. and the retail store for Table Talk Pies, Walsh said.
While the DCU Center location focuses more heavily on apparel like T-shirts from various Worcester artists, the new Canal District location will be focused on gift items like jewelry and housewares, although both stores will have crossover merchandise, Walsh said.
With the expansion, the retailer has added its third full-time employee.
"The Canal District has been very welcoming, and we are excited," Walsh said.
Worcester Wares will be the first business to open in the $21-million Worcester Public Market from local developer Allen Fletcher, although the upper-floor apartments are already open. The anchor tenant for the ground-floor businesses is expected to be a taproom for the Wachusett Brewing Co., the first Worcester location for the Westminster brewery.
