The unemployment rate in the Worcester metropolitan area ticked up slightly to 4.7 percent in July from 4.6 percent in June, according to data released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The unemployment rate also increased from July 2016, when it was 4.3 percent. Still, more people were employed this July compared to 2016 (338,224 vs. 331,993), but the unemployment rate increased because the size of the labor force increased.
Elsewhere in Central Massachusetts, unemployment rose in the Framingham area to 3.8 percent last month from 3.7 percent in June and 3.2 percent in July 2016. The Leominister-Gardner area had a smaller increase to 5.2 percent in July vs. 4.9 percent in June and 4.8 percent in July 2016.
Statewide, unemployment increased to 4.4 percent from last July’s 3.9 percent, but didn’t change at all from this June.
From last month, the state reported that 16,100 jobs were lost, but 53,700 have been gained since July 2016.
