Worcester to save $2M with new natural gas contract

Worcester is expecting to save $2 million over the course of a new three-year contract with Constellation NewEnergy to supply city facilities with 2.6 million therms of natural gas each year.
The contract, which began Dec. 1, will supply natural gas to 95 city and school buildings. In the current fiscal year, the city’s school department will save $395,000 and other city buildings will save $200,000.
Those savings result in a 34-percent reduction in natural gas prices from the previous contract, according to Monday press release from the city.
“The city administration has worked hard to put in place responsible and efficient financial management practices that best serve the Worcester taxpayers,” said City Manager Edward Augustus. “This new gas supply contract is just one way we’re making smart fiscal decisions that benefit all residents.”
The city has, for the last three years, been purchasing natural gas from Direct Energy Business Marketing, LLC, via PowerOptions, a nonprofit energy-buying consortium.
Worcester in November executed a new three-year deal with Constellation new Energy.
