The City of Worcester is requiring all workers at public-facing retail stores, including grocery and convenience stores and pharmacies, to wear face masks or some type of face covering as protection during the coronavirus pandemic.
City Manager Edward Augustus announced the issuance of the order Monday.
"This is important to ensure that not only employees who are providing such important services to allow residents to go get their prescriptions, their groceries and other needs met, but it's for the public going in and out of those facilities to be as safe as possible," Augustus said.
The order is likely to go into effect in 48 hours, he said. "It should be the core responsibility of the employers to provide them for the employees."
Augustus also admonished people who've left discharged masks and gloves and other equipment on sidewalks or streets. He asked them to discard them safely and to thoroughly clean hands afterward.
"We need to act in a way that is considerate to one another," he said.
City officials have declared Monday, April 27 as a city-wide Take Out Day. Residents are encouraged to order takeout from their favorite local restaurants on this day to help local businesses during the outbreak.
