The two rink hockey facility proposed in the Canal District has been unanimously approved by Worcester’s Planning Board, with a groundbreaking set for Friday.
The vote took place at the group's meeting Wednesday night. With no need for approval by the city council, the project being developed by the Worcester Business Development Corp. will now move forward. The organization is undertaking $2.7 million in remediation work at 112 Harding St., a former GKN Sinter Metals site, that will house the sports complex.
The location across from the Canal Lofts will house two rinks and be used as practice space for area colleges and high schools, according to Roberta Brian, WBDC's vice president of projects. A Worcester Magazine report stated that the new Worcester Railers will use the space for practice.
The construction of the new facility will bring 3.5 acres of land back into taxable use, Brian said.
