HDL Therapeutics, a Worcester startup working on a treatment for arterial diseases related to build up of fatty material, had positive results in its first clinical trial.
The company, which is using incubator space at Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives' facility at 100 Barber Ave., is developing a therapy using a patient's own blood plasma and enriches it to help the body remove fatty material known as lipids. The results were presented at an American Heart Association event in Boston last week.
In a seven-week study, patients with a lipid metabolism disorder were found to have increased levels of particles that help the body carry out lipids and a statistically significant reduction in degeneration of the walls of the arteries caused by fatty deposits.
The lipid metabolism disorder — called homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, or HoFH — is a rare genetic disorder characterized by high levels of bad cholesterol levels in the blood.
HDL Therapeutics, which also has offices in Vero Beach, Fla., has not disclosed a timeline for bringing the therapy to market.
