VALIS, a Worcester-based software solutions provider for metal recycling, is beta testing its flagship product, VALI-Sort, to help create more profitable sorting methods for the industry.
VALI-Sort integrates directly with recycling sorting systems to provide critical insights needed for data-driven decision making. Through a host of machine learning algorithms VALI-Sort delivers real-time quality monitoring and sort optimization based on profitability, according to a Thursday press release from the company.
The ultimate goal is to process scrap metal by empowering the supply chain through innovative use of artificial intelligence. The recycling industry has long been plagued by problems in sorting the various types of recyclables, where individual consumers are originally tasked with separating out the materials, which leads to confusion.
VALI-Sort is currently under beta-site testing, the VALIS team will be onsite through March 24 at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Convention and will be offering initial demonstrations of the product.
The demonstration of this product offering is a big step for VALIS, which is one of five business enterprise units of Solvus Global, a Worcester technology solutions provider for the manufacturing industry.
Founded in 2019, VALIS was awarded $1.25 million through a Phase I and Phase II Small Business Innovation Research from the National Science Foundation, which enables production and development of VALI-Sort.
“VALIS’ real-time quality monitoring product serves as the eyes that help scrap processors understand current product composition,'' VALIS CEO Emily Molstad said in a written announcement. “Not only does VALIS add tremendous value to the scrap sorting industry, but it supports the long-term stability, profitability, and sustainability of the metal recycling supply chain.”
CORRECTION: A previous edition of this article incorrectly stated that VALI-Sort was part of a new product launch. Instead, VALI-Sort is currently being beta tested and assessed.
