A local talent agency has had an actor from Worcester cast in a major Hollywood production.
Angelo Gray, a child actor represented by Worcester-based Karon Shea Model Management, has been cast in a supporting role in “The Running Man,” a Paramount Pictures film based on the 1982 bestselling Stephen King novel.
Gray’s competed in the talent competition hosted by the International Model and Talent Association in New York City last summer, according to a Tuesday press release from Shea Management.
“I’m incredibly proud of how quickly Angelo has made his mark,” Karon Shea, president and executive director of Shea Management, said in the press release. “Worcester has a rich history, and now it has Angelo Gray to add to its legacy.”
King’s “The Running Man” is a dystopian thriller taking place in the then-future year of 2025. Set in a society torn apart by economic collapse and political strife, it tells the story of a participant in a reality show where contestants win money by avoiding a team of assassins sent to kill them.
The book, written by King under the pen name Richard Bachman, has previously been adapted into a 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Paramount’s version of the movie stars well-known Hollywood actors like Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, and William H. Macy, according to IMDB. It’s being directed by Edgar Wright, known for such films as “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “Shaun of the Dead.” The film is expected to be released in November.
Founded in 1980 and based out of offices at 65 Water St., Karon Shea Model Management represents models, actors, signers, and dancers across the Northeast, according to its website.
Paramount’s “The Running Man” was filmed primarily in the United Kingdom, according to 4filming. Central Massachusetts had been home to an increasing number of major Hollywood productions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but a combination of strikes and changes in film studio spending has led to a slow down in work for local workers and businesses which provide services to the industry.
While some scenes of the AMC television show “The Walking Dead: Dead City” were filmed in Worcester during the summer of 2024, according to reporting from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, major productions have yet to return to the region at the volume seen before 2023.
Smaller independent productions continue to be filmed in the area, with facilities like HollyWoo Studios in Leicester giving local creators space to work in.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated Gray had appeared in two other Hollywood productions. In fact, this is his first role.
