Worcester Sun halts publication

The inaugural print edition of the Worcester Sun.
The Worcester Sun, an online local news website which just two months ago began a weekly print edition, has temporarily ceased publication.
In an email to readers Wednesday, the Sun described the decision as “difficult … but necessary” despite increased readership and advertising since launching a weekly print edition in December.
“In addition to the issues we knew we’d face, problems arose that we did not account for,” the Sun wrote. “We can overcome these problems but not in a timely, cost-effective manner.”
The Sun describes the break as a “brief hiatus” to address those issues and “asses (the Sun’s) place in the market."
The Sun began its online publication in August 2015 and in the email, said it hopes to return soon.
When reached by phone, co-founder and publisher Mark Henderson did not put a timeline on when the paper would resume publication.
All of the paper’s contributors were freelancers, and only Henderson and co-founder Fred Hurlbrink were full-time employees.
The paper could relaunch organically, but that would take much longer than if it explored some kind of partnership, Henderson said, adding that the paper is currently exploring some kind of strategic partnership or co-op.
Henderson didn’t detail why publication ceased, but said it was a number of things.
“There were things we saw that we anticipated and other things we didn’t anticipate,” he said. “There were a number of things we had to deal with and with the resources that we had, we weren’t doing neither timely nor efficiently.”
