The former Showcase Cinemas North in Worcester has been sold to a real estate investment company for $8.75 million, according to the Worcester County Registry of Deeds.
The property at 135 Brooks St. was sold to Criterion Group LLC, a New York real estate firm with a portfolio including apartments, industrial yards, and truck parking facilities. The deal closed July 1.
Criterion’s managing director of acquisitions, Christopher Sullivan, told WBJ the property would be used as industrial space, but he would not give greater specifics.
The movie theater closed permanently after shutting down in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Opened in 1996, the building occupies more than 95,000 square feet on a 17.5-acre property, according to a lease listing from early June.
It was re-posted for lease on July 13, advertised as an industrial property.
Norwood-based National Amusements, Inc., which owns Showcase Cinemas, purchased the land in 1993 and spent $11 million on construction, according to land assessors data. The City of Worcester last assessed the property at $6.8 million.
