The Worcester Sharks, Worcester's minor league hockey team, is the eastern conference winner of the American Hockey League's annual Team Business Services awards in the group ticket sales growth category for the second consecutive year, according to Worcester Sharks President Michael Mudd.
Teams from both the western and eastern conferences received awards for overall ticket sales revenue growth; season ticket sales growth; group ticket sales growth, and sponsorship sales growth, as well as community service and fan experience.
Michael Mudd, president of the Worcester Sharks, said group sales are vital these days, as fewer people are committing to season tickets.
"More and more, group sales is where you make your hay at the minor league level, so that's really where we've focused our efforts," Mudd said.
Group ticket sales increased 31 percent from the 2010-2011 season to the 2011-2012 season, according to Mudd. Total tickets sold also increased by 11 percent.
The team was also awarded for excellence in community service. Mudd said that an emphasis on community outreach cultivates the Sharks' future fan base.
